English

At Hayes Park School we have broken down the National Curriculum programme of study for English (transcription, handwriting, grammar and composition) into target cards for each year so that it is clear which elements each year group is learning (see below). As can be seen from the whole school overview, during a child’s time at our school, they learn to understand and to write in a range of genres. From year 2 onwards, we use the Literacy & Language scheme for English, which we feel is a natural progression from the Read Write Inc. scheme in KS1 (we also utilise the RWI Comprehension and Fresh Start programmes from year 2 onwards dependent on cohort). Both of these are complimented by the use of a class reader as a stimulus for writing. Further details on our English curriculum can be found by viewing the policy.

Phonics Scheme

At Hayes Park School we take a systematic approach to the teaching of phonics by following the Read Write Inc Phonics scheme. We believe that being able to decode quickly and fluently opens the door to learning across the curriculum. Our reading leader ensures that all teachers and LSAs receive extensive training and support on how to teach phonics effectively, so that all children are able to make rapid progress in their phonics knowledge, enabling them to read fluently. Children’s progress is regularly assessed to ensure they are being taught effectively and constantly moving their learning forward.

At the end of Year 1 all children complete a phonics screening check; during this check children are asked to read 40 real and nonsense words. Those children who do not pass the phonics screening check receive additional phonic support into year 2 and beyond as necessary. Those children who join our school in year 2 or above with phonic knowledge or fluency below expected, will also receive rapid catch up through the RWI programme and 1-2-1 support.

Reading Scheme

For early readers, children have two books from our reading scheme:

A Read Write Inc. book bag book, which is matched to the child’s phonic stage, enabling children to practise decoding words containing phonemes they are currently learning and be independent with their reading. A second book (for example: Oxford Reading Tree, Collins Big Cat), which is age-appropriate, but may contain a wider range of words for children to read with adult support. In addition to this, children are able to choose books from our library which may be above their reading level, but offer enjoyment when read aloud at home by a family member.

For more advanced readers:

The reading scheme is segmented into three zones (named after local roads), related to approximate age-related ability, these are:

  • ‘Raynton Readers’ – aimed at children in years 3&4
  • ‘Balmoral Bookworms’ – aimed at children in years 5&6
  • ‘Lansbury Librarians’ – aimed to provide a challenge to children in Year 6 who are reading at above age-related expectations.

The books available in each section of the scheme are a mixture of: ‘scheme books’ – such as Oxford University Press (including ‘Project X’) and ‘real books’ by significant authors, such as Enid Blyton, Anthony Horowitz & David Walliams (to name a few). There is also a spread of fiction, non-fiction, myths & legends, poetry, plays (including Shakespeare) and books from a variety of heritages. In addition to this, children access books from our library and have free choice to encourage a love for reading.

Maths

At Hayes Park School we follow the White Rose Hub scheme of work. The time frame is used as a guide, dependent on the need of our children. We adapt this and supplement this material from a range of other resources.
